My name sign is this. My name is Al-Hassan.

Hang on-- it's AL-Hassan with alif-laam.

My name is Al-Sayyed

Al-Sayyed.

The reason this is my name sign is that I have three deaf siblings so since I'm the first this is my name sign.

I was born in Alexandria.

Where? In Al-Shatby by the university there.

You know by the big dome?

Yes, I was born and grew up there.

But my parents and ancestors are from the Bahari (seaside) neighborhood.

You know where I'm from? From the farmland, I am.

I was born precisely there in Al-Qobari.

Yes, I grew up staying there the whole time.

I'm 51. I was born in 1973 during the war in Anwar El-Sadat's presidency.

I was born Deaf just as I am now.

There are 4 hearing people in my family. No other Deaf people. I'm the only one. No others.

Me, my parents-- my distant relative, he got married and had three Deaf kids.

And then he had three hearing kids, altogether 6.

So the siblings are 6-- 3 and 3 Deaf.

My mother and father? No, they're both hearing.

I'm originally Deaf and at first my school was here in the Deaf Association in Mansheyya, but then when I heard that it shut down I moved.

I was born in Al-Qorabi.

When I first entered the Deaf school it was new, the one in Gianaclis- the Al-Amal School for the Deaf as it is now.

And then, after the third year of secondary school, my class, we weren't satisfied with just a high school degree, we wanted to go to college! That was our idea at first.

But the school said no to the idea of college out in that rural area. There is a university out there, it's successful.

Then, Egypt decreed that they had to open up college for us so I was so happy, so I got placed and graduated secondary school, and it's been open ever since.

At first, he and I were together [in school], before no. I was new.

Back in high school, all of this (the association) wasn't here. It was new, I was one of the first here.

I was with him too. We're the same.

Of course we benefit from the school. There are good teachers and some not so good. There were two very exacting teachers-- he got a good one, I didn't, and we were in separate classes.

Right, right. My teachers were really difficult, I was afraid of them. But it was because she wanted us to succeed. His teacher, well he wasn't so great.

Wait a second, I want to say something more. Now, there are Deaf people who have new teachers and don't learn anything! They don't know how to read and write like us. None of them [the teachers] have experience and all they care about is getting their paycheck.

It's because, there's blame-- the place that has things done right is here in the Association, or in the Asdaa Association too, there's real education there but not at the Al-Amal School for the Deaf.

Is the camera working?

All they had us do was copy what was on the board into our notebooks without us knowing what any of it meant. There were no questions or anything.

My brain stopped.

When I received the Certificate of Merit I went to a great company but everything was "forbidden, forbidden" and they just ushered me out unceremoniously. Some places are like that.

But Deaf people are skilled and focused workers. That's how we are!

I have a question. So before, I worked as a chef in a hotel.

I was working well but I couldn't write that well.

But I was able to finish tasks quickly and efficiently.

There's differences.

Someone can have no degree but still be a great worker.

Wait so at school-- he and I were in separate classes. My teacher was difficult, we would be punished. And a second point: writing-

Was it a man? No the teacher was a woman. She was strong!

The reason for the punishment was because we would be stubborn, that's all.

We had to really pass the tests, it wasn't like we could just coast through, we were made to write correctly and also to oralize correctly.

His group was good at writing, but my group, we were failures. At 8 years, we got a new guy, I was afraid of being punished by him. He's passed away now, may he rest in peace.

Our group which had rules and consequences, we were together every year and group up together.

After I graduated, I realized that I understood things well, and it's thanks to that teacher.

What was the goal of the punishment?

After year 7 I was put into the good class with him.

I was scared switching classes, or we all were, because I was illiterate, but he would help me with writing and with tests.

When I made a mistake, I would get my hand hit 10 times as a punishment.

This demanding teacher was one of a kind, there's no one like her in the whole world.

That's fate.

No, for example, my family uses the same signs. Go ahead.

My family and I, we communicate with kindness and understand each other, but some other deaf people from other associations sign differently and we don't understand it.

I used to sign "heavily" [with difficulty], and then I came to the association and practiced and now I'm strong signer so I thank the Association.

My family signs the same yes, but girls sign a little bit differently. I know both ways so I can sign one way in one situation and another way in another.

It's because girls are at the school in Hadra, we're at the school in Gianaclis.

I know how to sign both ways.

كان المجموعه دايما مع بعض كل سنه

لا مثلا الاشارة انا مع العائلة نفس هي نفس الاشارة

الاشارة العائلة شبه بعض بس البنت جوها مختلف شويا في الاشارة سبب انا السيد جوة في شحصين الاشارة دي انا عارفها ام التاني محتلفين

السبب هي في مدرسة الحضرة وانا في مدرسة جناكليس

انا من جوة عارف الاثنين بمعني الاشاره عندي خبرة انا فاهم كدة وكدة

العائلة انا اعلمهم لا هما بيشوفنا بنكلم وهما بيتعلمه لان الله يوحي لهم

انا علمت مفيش هما بيص علينا ويقول ايه ايه واقوله وايه وكمان ربنا يوحي يتعلم بسرعة

الله يامر العقل انه يبقي متفتح ليتعلم الاشاره حتي انا لو بتكلم حاجه والصم حاجه

لالا مثلا الاسم الفلاح او الصعيدي هما اشارة ثقيل الاثنين خليهم علي جنب ام مصر الاشارة شبه بعض

الصعيدي اشارة ازاي لما اساله هو يفول ليه بتسال انا بفكر عادي اسال شبه عادي لا مختلفين لازم افهمه الاول ليه وبعد كده نمطلق في الكلام الصعيدي بعد كده هيفهمك

ليه السبب الكتابه عشان في انواع خشب لازم اعرف هو عايز انهي نوع دماغي ما توقفش

I learned because my parents are Deaf.

I developed my signing from my parents and then I enrolled in the Al-Amal school for the Deaf and kept learning their from my peers.

When I first started school, my signing wasn't very strong yet...

I was progressing with learning to sign when I found out that the Association is here in Mansheyya so I went here and developed a lot more.

Hey, Tell him that the association here is like our mother.

Hey- So in school we just learn a little bit. After finishing school, we go to the association.

This place is where they learn. This place is the mother to all the Alexandrian Deaf community. Does he understand?

The association is old-- it's been here since 1957.

Hey, so there's a Deaf school and there's a Hard of Hearing school and in the end they both come here to the Association.

At the school, the education isn't so good.

The association plans Deaf Education.

Here we take care of psychological needs.

Our education and development is in a huge part thanks to this place!

In school here there is no proper upbringing at all-- zero at all.

I was motivated to learn myself.

Regarding learning, my parents taught me a little bit, and I add a bit to that bit myself.

That's all.

Also, I'm strong in mathematics.

If I read something and don't know a word, my hearing brother tells me and then I know it. But at the Al-Amal School for the Deaf there was never education.

Well, Alexandria. I was born in Alexandria and my father is from a rural area called Mansoura. I've always been in Alexandria-- my life and activities are all here.

I was just born Deaf. I grew up Deaf just since birth.

I had a fever [to become Deaf].

I've always been Deaf.

I'll talk. Years ago, my mother and my father had me and I was born Deaf. Then one month I got a high fever.

So I was checked into the hospital and then well that was it, I've always had no hearing.

In my case, my mother and father are relatives. So four children were born Deaf. I'm deaf and my family has four Deaf people.

I never had a fever.

My mother and father didn't know each other, and they gave birth to three deaf kids.

Never.

I have deaf relatives one one side and deaf relatives on my mother's side, but the two families had never met before.

I don't have any [deaf] relatives at all. Just the four of us siblings, we all married Deaf. That's it.

No, they [my parents] are just hearing.

Public education needs to change. All the teachers need to learn sign language fluently so that they can teach Arabic properly, instead of just letting whatever slide. Because that's our right, the right of any Deaf person.

2002, I was born in 2002.

I'm from a part of Egypt which is the governorate of Alexandria and I've been living here up until now.

I was born deaf originally, thank God [alhamdullilah].

So I was born originally-

My mother and father, they're deaf.

My father was also born deaf originally like normal.

And I have a hearing brother he's the older one and I'm the younger one.

What?

I was born Deaf, God gave me my Deafness.

I know that for God to give me Deafness from birth is normal. Of course there are other types of disabilities, like blindness, mental disability, etc. I'm healthy and normal and I thank God for that.

From my parents, friends from the Deaf Fraternal Society in Mansheyya, before from school at Al-Amal, and also from the Asdaa' association -- all of these experiences gave me signing.

I went to a Deaf public school, the Al-Amal school for the Deaf in Gianaclis.

At first, I went to public school.

Private school was expensive, I couldn't afford it.

So I went to a Deaf public school, you know, the Al-Amal School for the Deaf, that's the one I went to.

The public education wasn't so great, so then I came here to the Asdaa' Association where they have educational programs.

I learned many new things and got to travel abroad.

And of course it changed my future. I got a new kind of international job, since 2019 I've been a coach and gotten to travel abroad to Germany.

المدارس الخاصة غالية ولم تناسب ظروف عائلتي

فروحت مدرسة حكومية للصم اللي هو مدرسة الأمل للصم اللي ذكرتها سابقا

التعليم الحكومي مكانش قد كدا فبعدين جيت هنا على جمعية أصداء للتعلم

واتعلمت حاجات جديدة وعرفت اسافر برا

طبعا غير مستقبلي وأخدت شغل دولي كدا بقيت مدرب من سنة ٢٠١٩ وبسافر ألمانيا

التعليم الحكومي لازم يتغير. كل المدرسين لازم يتعلموا لغة الإشارة بالطلاقة عشان يقدروا يعلّموا العربي بشكل مظبوط بدلا من كلام "اي حاجة" وعشان دا حقنا وحق أي شخص أصم.
