Well, Alexandria. I was born in Alexandria and my father is from a rural area called Mansoura. I've always been in Alexandria-- my life and activities are all here.

I was just born Deaf. I grew up Deaf just since birth.

انا اتولدت أصم وعلى طول أصم

I had a fever [to become Deaf].

I've always been Deaf.

أنا جتلي سخونية

I'll talk. Years ago, my mother and my father had me and I was born Deaf. Then one month I got a high fever.

أنا هحكي- زمان لما كنت رضيع فجأة جتلي سخونية عالية

So I was checked into the hospital and then well that was it, I've always had no hearing.

ودخلت المستشفى ومن ساعتها بقيت أصم

In my case, my mother and father are relatives. So four children were born Deaf. I'm deaf and my family has four Deaf people.

بالنسبة لي, أمي وأبويا قرايب وخلفوا ٤ أولاد صم. أنا أصم وعيلتي فيها ٤ أفراد صم

I never had a fever.

عمري ما جتلي سخونية

My mother and father didn't know each other, and they gave birth to three deaf kids.

انما أنا أبويا وأمي مكانوش عارفين بعض وخلفوا ٣ صم

عيلتي كلها صم يعني

I have deaf relatives one one side and deaf relatives on my mother's side, but the two families had never met before.

عندي قرايب صم على جانب واحد ومن جانب والدتي لكن الجانبين معرفوش بعض

I don't have any [deaf] relatives at all. Just the four of us siblings, we all married Deaf. That's it.

How did you learn to sign?

I learned because my parents are Deaf.

أنا اتعلمت عشان أمي وأبويا صم

I developed my signing from my parents and then I enrolled in the Al-Amal school for the Deaf and kept learning their from my peers.

اشارتي اتطورت من أهلي وثم التحقت بمدرسة الأمل وكملت التعلم من الطلاب التانيين

ماذا عنك؟

في الاول لما دخلت المدرسة, اشارتي كانت ضعيفة شوية

I was progressing with learning to sign when I found out that the Association is here in Mansheyya so I went here and developed a lot more.

كنت بتعلم الاشارة لما عرفت عن الجمعية هنا في المنشية فجيت هنا واتعلمت أكتر

Hey, Tell him that the association here is like our mother.

فهّمه ان الجمعية زي أمنا

Hey- So in school we just learn a little bit. After finishing school, we go to the association.

يعني في المدرسة بنتعمل حبة صغيرة بس وبعد المدرسة بنيجي هنا للجمعية

This place is where they learn. This place is the mother to all the Alexandrian Deaf community. Does he understand?

هو دا المكان اللي احنى بنتعلم فيه. المكان دا زي أم لكل الصم في الاسكندية. هو فاهم؟

The association is old-- it's been here since 1957.

الجمعية قديمة. هي موجودة من سنة ١٩٥٧

أنا كنت لسه مش مولود

افتتحت في سنة ١٩٥٧

وبعد كدا اتولدنا انا واخواتي الصم وبابا كان بيخلينا نيجي هنا عشان نتعلم

Hey, so there's a Deaf school and there's a Hard of Hearing school and in the end they both come here to the Association.

فيه مدرسة للصم وفيه مدرسة لضعاف السمع. الاتنين بييجوا هنا.

وماذا عن حضرتك؟

At the school, the education isn't so good.

في المدرسة التعليم مش قد كدا

The association plans Deaf Education.

بس الجمعية بتخطط لتعليم الصم

Here we take care of psychological needs.

وبتخطط للاحتياجات النفسية

Our education and development is in a huge part thanks to this place!

تعلمنا وتطورنا بشكل كبير بفضل المكان دا!

Can you read and write Arabic well, or not?

انت بتعرف تقرأ وتكتب عربي كويس ولا لا وليه؟

In school here there is no proper upbringing at all-- zero at all.

في المدرسة مفيش تربية خالص

I was motivated to learn myself.

أنا كان عندي حماس اتعلم بنفسي

Regarding learning, my parents taught me a little bit, and I add a bit to that bit myself.

أهلي علموني شوية وضفت حبة بنفسي

Also, I'm strong in mathematics.

وكمان أنا قوي في الرياضيات

If I read something and don't know a word, my hearing brother tells me and then I know it. But at the Al-Amal School for the Deaf there was never education.
